What is co-housing?

Cohousing communities are usually of 20-40 houses that are managed by and for the residents. Every household has a separate, private residence in addition to common areas and amenities like gardens, shared kitchens, guest rooms, and carpools. Cohousing can be an excellent option to live in a neighborhood that balances privacy with a highly sociable neighbourhood life in which residents enjoy the community, shared activities and events, and interacting with one another. The movement began in Denmark in the 1960s and has since spread to Germany, the United States, and Scandinavia. Residents may own their own homes, rent, or live in communal housing, for instance. Cohousing might be developed independently by residents, custom built, or in collaboration with housing organizations and developers. Cohousing projects can involve building new homes or remodeling farms, homes, or urban hillsides. Cohousing communities can be multigenerational, embracing individuals of all ages and family types, or they might be tailored to older adults or groups with shared interests, such as women’s or LGBT groups.
